Saturday - October 3rd
After the tour, we went over to the local animal shelter. It is very small, with very few dogs. It seems that there are a lot of rescue organizations in the are, so the load is spread.
Next, we went down town to check out RiverFest. There were many booths, a lot offering food, and some that seemed out of place, like a booth selling bathroom fixtures. We were limited by the parking meter, but it was just long enough.
We went to a mall, and while waiting for Uncle Paul's sun glasses to be fixed, we had some Pizza.
Next, we went on the great rug hunt. We went to a few furniture stores to try and find a rug he had seen. Carolyn joined us towards the end, but nothing was decided.
We rented a movie, Australia, and watched it after eating great spaghetti that Uncle Paul made.

Bald Head Island - October 2nd
We drove south along the coast towards Carolina Beach and passed through Kure Beach. We looked at the aquarium at Fort Fisher (from the outside) and took the ferry across the river to Southport.
From Southport, we took another ferry (this time without the car) to Bald head Island.
Bald Head Island is the most southern of the North Carolina Barrier islands, has North Carolina oldest standing lighthouse, old baldy, some restaurants and lots of very nice homes.
After having a drink at Eb and Flo's, we rented a golf cart, since no cars are allowed on the island.
We drove around the island, stopped at the lighthouse, and went down the beach.
I was forced to get my feet wet and sandy (see pictures) at the beach.
We drove around some more, and then went back to Eb and Flo's for supper.
We took the 8:30 ferry back to Soutport and then drove back home.

Battleship North Carolina - October 1st
The battleship served in the pacific World war II. There is a self guided tour of the battleship which is very interesting.
After the tour we went too downtown Wilmington, walked along the riverfront, looked in a few shops, and had lunch at the Front Street Brewery.
On the way home we stopped at an antique store where Uncle Paul has some pieces to bo sold.
In the evening we went out to supper at The Dockside restaurant.
On the way home we stopped at the supermarket and got some ice cream for Desert.
We got home and had ice cream and relaxed in front of the TV.
From New Jersey to Wilmington NC - September 30th
When I got on the plane, I saw that the person seated next to me was very wide and already had both arm rests up. It was a tight squeeze, but I didn't say anything. Just before we pushed back, the flight attendant told me I could switch seats so that everyone would be comfortable.
The flight was fine, and we arrived in Charlotte just on schedule.
The flight to Wilmington was fine too and we arrived more or less on schedule.
Uncle Paul met me at the airport, and after picking up my bag, we set off.
We had lunch at P.T.'s Olde Fashioned Grille and then went home.
I met Skyler for the first time. She is very cute for a 3 month old baby.
We spent the rest of the afternoon doing computer stuff. I set up a wireless router for them so I could use my own computer.
After Summer came to pick up Skyler, Uncle Paul made supper, and then we relaxed and went to sleep.

New York - September 29th
I got off the bus at the Port Authority Bus Station and got a MetroCard Fun Pass that would let me use the buses and subways for the whole day.
I walk down to 34th and 9th to B&H Photo. I bought a filter for me new lens and a lens hood for my old lens.
From there I took the bus along 34th street to 5th avenue neat the empire state building and then the subway down to the Brooklyn Bridge subway station.
I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. The views were great, but it was very windy.
I walked around the Brooklyn side for a bit and then took the Subway back to Manhattan and up to 77th street. I tried to say hello to the people I know at Ramaz, but they were all busy or not there.
I went into a best buy on the corner of 86th and Lexington and found the address of the New York SPCA. It was on 92nd between 1st and York, so I walked up there. They didn't really have time for me.
I walked through Carl Schurz Park and saw the dog parks (two, one for small dogs and one for large ones) and Gracie Mansion (The official residence of the Mayor of New York City). I walked passed 10 east end avenue where we lived when we were in New York, and the doorman, Richie, actually recognized me.
I took the 79th street bus across town to Broadway and then walked down to 41st street and then back to Port Authority Bus Station.
I took the bus back to Willowbrook mall, where I met Dana.
We did some mall walking, had supper and then went to get Dana some groceries.
That was it for the day.

We went back to Schull for Mincha and NeIla.
The place was more or less packed the whole time, and the experience was more or less the same as Rosh HaShana.
We went to the Finkles after the fast. There was too much food, including about 7 types of ice cream. The Fields daughter Adina came with us.
we got home around 10.

Portland to New Jersey
The plane left on time and arrived on time. The plane was equiped with a new enertainmanet system that let you watch movies and a lot of live TV channels. I saw two movies during the flight: Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and The Proposal.
After getting out of the airport, I called Dana, and she picked me up about 15 minutes. We drove home, had enough time to do a little food shopping, change and go to schull. After Schull we went to the Fields for supper and then home.

I started with some shopping, them visited the Oregon Humane Society. They have a lovely facility. I was given a tour in Hebrew, by Dora.
Next I went to the Lloyd center - a nice mall in Portland.
My next stop was Powell books, A huge bookstore in down town Portland.
Mt. Tabor park was my next stop. It's a lovely park built around an extinct volcano.
I took the long way back, stopping at some more stores to look around.
On my third day in Portland, I drove the Mt. Hood Scenic highway
After getting some gas, I left Portland and headed east. I stopped at the Forest Service information center in Sandy and then continued on Government Camp (That's the name of the town).
In Government Camp I visited the local museum and information center. I drove up to Timberline Lodge at about 6000' or over 1800 meters.
From there I drove to Timothy Lake. It's very nice, but I was getting hungry so I started back.
I drove to Hood River (the name of the town) where I are something and then took I-84 along the Columbia River back towards Portland.
My first stop was Cascade Locks. These locks were used in the past, but when the Bonneville Dam was built they were flooded and had to stop being used.
Next, I stopped at Bonneville Dam. Bonneville Dam was built in the late 30's to provide electricity for the Northwest. Since then it has been expanded several times.
At exit 35 I got off the interstate and started driving along the Historic Columbia River Highway. It runs parallel to the interstate, but only has one lane each way.
Along the road there are many waterfalls. I stopped at Horsetail Falls and at Multnomah Falls. I then stopped at Vista House at Crown Point where there are beautiful views of the Columbia River.
I climber up to Larch Mountain, which is 1000 meters above the Columbia. When I got to the end of the road, I discovered that you have to pay, but I didn't have exact change, and there was no one to make change, so I had to leave without seeing the views.
By this time I was getting tired, so I went back home. I drove about 250 miles or 400 km today.

On my second day I drove towards Oregon's pacific coast. Before leaving, I managed to get the GPS to work which made the trip much nicer. I left Portland at about 8 am and drove west on US-26. The first part was pretty boring, but the last 30 miles where through forested mountains and very beautiful. I got to Seaside at around 10 and after a short visit to the information center, I headed to the beach. The beach is very nice, but since I don't really like sand I didn't go and dip my toe in the ocean. My first stop was at the aquarium. It's a small exhibit of the local sea life. They also have a group of harbor seals that you can feed. Next I took a walk along the Prom(enade). It's mostly various types of hotels. I returned to the car and drove to the Tilamook trail head. After I read the information I decided that I would walk on the trail for an hour and then come back. The trail was very nice, mostly shaded, but quite steep. After about half an hour I decided I had had enough and started back down. I ate some lunch at Subway and then headed to Astoria. Astoria is a nice little town at the mouth of the Columbia River. One of its claims to fame is the movies that were made there including Free Willy, Goonies and Kindergarten Cop. I went in to the Information Center and got a map. There is a path along the river, and I walked along most of it, about 3.5 km. At the end of the path there is a pier with a large group of very loud sea lions. The posed very nicely for pictures. There is a trolley that runs along the path, and I took that to the beginning and started my drive back to Portland. I made a mistake and decided to drive along the northern bank of the river. This made the drive about 50% longer. I got back to Portland about 7:30 pm. Pictures can be seen at http://picasaweb.google.com/gadi.ben.avi/OregonCoast | ביומי השני בפורטלנד נסעתי לחוף האוקיינוס השקט של אורגון.

On Monday morning, Dana took me to the airport. The drive to the airport took a long time. Once I got there I checked my bag, went through security and got to the gate just as they were starting to board. I had a little problem at the security check point because the name of the boarding pass was Gadi and on the passport is says Gad, but she decided that it was Ok. The flight was uneventful. I sat in row 5, which is the first row in coach, so I could see everything that was going on in 1st class. Once I got to Portland, I took the shuttle to the rental car place and got a car. They gave me a Hyundai Accent. Then I set up my GPS. It could tell me where I was, show me where I had to go, but not tell me how to get there, so I had to do it the old fashioned way. I took a while, but I finally got to Len's. Len and I went to high school in NY together. After a bit of schmoozing, we went down the block to Burger King so I could have something to eat. After that we went to AAA, and I got a book and maps. We then went disk golfing. This is like golf, but you use Frisbee's instead of little balls. It was fun, and I a little walk and some sun. We came back and now I am writing, while Len went out to play some volleyball and visit his Mother. |

Travel to US – הנסיעה לארצות הברית
On Wednesday I left work at around 1 pm so I could get everything done. I went home and did a load of laundry. While the laundry was getting done, I took some food for Nochi to my parents' house. Nochi Came along to help. By the time we got back, the washing machine had finished. I transferred to clothes to the dryer, and started packing. At around 4:30 I took Nochi for a long walk, since it would be our last walk for a while. At around 5:30, I went over to Etti's to give her the key to my mail box so she could collect the mail. A bit later I took Nochi to his hotel. My next stop was the mall. I had something to eat, bought some last minute stuff and saw a movie, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. The flight was long, and there was no movie, but other than that it was OK. We landed at Newark at 2:45, about half an hour late. Going through passport control was a breeze, but I had to wait a long time for my suitcase. I was selected for a extra special customs check (they check every 20th passenger), and then left the terminal. My parents picked me up, and we drove to Caldwell, where we met my sister Dana. She drove us to a local shopping are to have something to eat, and left to do her thing. We are at Pantera Bread, and then walked back to the Hammermans, where my parents are staying.
